Food Cycle LA is Helping Keep More of Los Angeles Fed
Food Cycle LA is providing an answer to food insecurity.
An estimated 40% of food in Los Angeles is thrown into landfills. Yet 1 in 6 Americans is food insecure with children and the elderly most at risk.
FoodCycle LA recovers and diverts surplus food to communities experiencing food insecurity. They’ve partner with food retailers to reroute surplus food away from landfills to organizations working to feed hungry people. FCLA works with donors throughout Los Angeles to connect food with over 500 nonprofits that are feeding people.
They introduced the CareitAPP, bringing innovative technology to send excess food where it is most urgently needed and to incorporate volunteers to help pick up more food.
FCLA also created events (like ‘Sunday Suppers’) that use recovered food to create connection between people experiencing homelessness and community members
